Recent books I’ve loved

Sharing the books I’ve read recently and if I recommend adding them to your collection.

Hi friends! How are you? How was the weekend? I had high hopes for Halloween fun, but ended up getting sick. I had to miss P’s birthday party, which was devastating, but madre and Tom took the reins and all of the kids had a great time. Thankfully, I’m much better today and am getting an IV later this morning. This weekend, I binge watched Never Have I Ever and spent a lot of time reading in bed, which was a treat.

I haven’t had as much time to read lately. We’re officially in the holiday whirlwind, and with client test results (I looove going through them but it’s definitely a time commitment), the girls’ schedules, the Pilot’s schedule, it’s just been wild around here. Also, we’ve all been going to bed a little too late, and since I have to do my eye mask before bed, it really squashes some of my reading plans lol. I’m really trying to create more reading blocks throughout the day, and I’m so looking forward to November travel (Palm Springs and Arkansas) so I can read during all of the plane travel.

Something that has made it a bit easier to squeeze in reading time: my Kindle! I LOVE this is one fits in my purse and I’m not tempted to scroll on my phone. It’s been pretty convenient to tote this around with me!

There have been a couple of incredible books in my life lately, and I’m excited to share the details with ya.

Recent books I’ve loved

XOXO, Cody

If you’re going to read this book, I definitely recommend the Audible version so you can hear it in Cody’s voice! What a treasure of a human. I had high expectations for this one – I expected it to be highly entreating – and it didn’t disappoint. It gives you all of the laughs and warm fuzzies of an XO, Cody Peloton ride, while you get a deep dive into his story and background. It was fascinating to learn about his upbringing, his relationship with his mom, the Dancing with the Stars experience, and how he became such a huge fitness personality. 10/10

From Amazon:

Cody Rigsby has a lot of opinions: Kevin is the hottest Backstreet Boy; grape jelly is a crime against nature; if you wear flip-flops in New York City, you do not love yourself. But if there is one opinion—one truth—that he holds above all others, it’s that we shouldn’t let the fear of looking stupid or being judged hold us back from living our best lives.

Cody didn’t always feel this way. In XOXO, Cody, he opens up about his journey toward accepting himself, from growing up gay and poor in the South to his migration to New York City, where he went from broke-ass dancer to fitness icon. He intimately details what it was like to lose both his father and best friend to addiction and how he began to repair his relationship with his mom as an adult. He recounts his time working at a nightclub on the Lower East Side and his decision to audition for Peloton on a whim, and dishes about competing against Sporty Spice on Dancing with the Stars.

With raw and inspiring stories about learning how to handle the scary sh*t, XOXO, Cody is a bold and heartfelt reminder that sometimes laughing at yourself is the best medicine. Remember: It ain’t that deep, boo.

Redeeming Love

*All the trigger warnings*

This book was recommend in a Facebook group for faith-based reads, so just a heads up, it’s Christian fiction and is an 1800s era retelling of Gomer and Hosea. While I was reading it, I was thinking that it isn’t too Jesus-y, but then after about a quarter, I was like ok, it definitely is. Just wanted to spread the word if that’s not your cup of tea. I found it to be Jesus-y in the best possible way. This book will stick with me for life, and is an incredible testament of God’s unwavering love, even when we feel our most broken. While it wasn’t the best writing ever, and it dragged a bit before the last 25%, I’m so glad I stuck with it. 10/10 recommend.

From Amazon:

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.
Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything. Michael obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.

But with her unexpected softening comes overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny: her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does . . . the One who will never let her go.

A powerful retelling of the story of Gomer and Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

Esther: The Fingerprints of God

This was our fall Bible study and I got so much out of this one. As a relatively Bible newbie, it’s been helpful for me to deep dive into different books of the Bible with such a kind, insightful, and wise group of ladies. I learn so much from each session and it fills my cup for the entire week! When I read the book of Esther before our study, I had a hard time understanding everything, and didn’t know the historical context or background. Bible studies give so much context to what you’re reading, and enabled me to fully understand the impact of Esther and how all of the pieces came together. 9/10 recommend.

Don’t Forget to Write

This book is my new equivalent to Nora Goes Off Script. It’s light, fluffy, super witty, and the ending is EVERYTHING. I could’t read this one fast enough and would love a sequel. 😉 Definitely check it out if you’re looking for a fall *beach read.* 10/10

From Amazon:

When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye.

To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly. As the summer unfolds, Ada and Marilyn head for the Jersey shore, where Marilyn helps Ada scope out eligible matches—for anyone but Marilyn, that is.

Because if there’s one thing Marilyn’s learned from Ada, it’s that she doesn’t have to settle. With the school year quickly approaching and her father threatening to disinherit her, Marilyn must make her choice for her future: return to the comfortable life she knows or embrace a risky, unknown path on her own.

So, tell me, friends: what have you read lately? Anything I should add to be TBR list?

Fall Things To Do In Tucson

Sharing 15 of my favorite fall things to do in Tucson!

Hi friends! How’s the day going so far? I hope you’re having a great morning so far. I’m subbing for a dance cardio class and then spending the rest of the day getting the September Fit Team workouts ready to go. Join us here! New workouts go out on Sunday.

August is acting like it has somewhere to be. I can’t believe that next week is already September! Fall is almost here and Tucson is absolutely dreamy in the fall. The mild weather makes it a long and beautiful season for different activities, and there are also plenty of festivals and events that can make me enjoy the season even more. Today, I’m sharing a roundup of activities that you can do to experience the beauty of fall in all its glory in Tucson. I’d love to hear some local friends chime in the comments if I’m missing anything!

18 Fall Things To Do In Tucson

1) All Souls Procession Weekend

All Souls Procession is one of my favorite activities of the entire year. This year, it’s November 3rd – November 5th. You can check out the details and photos here. This event draws so many different types of people and they all walk the parade route together, with their faces beautifully painted, costumes, and carrying handmade ofrendas to honor those who have passed. With all of the division in the world, it’s a great reminder that we’re all human; it’s a meaningful experience that our entire family enjoys.

From their website:

The All Souls Procession is one of the most important, inclusive and authentic public ceremonies in North America today. The Procession had its beginnings in 1990 with a ceremonial performance piece created by local artist Susan Johnson. Johnson was grieving the passing of her father, and as an artist, she found solace in a creative, celebratory approach to memorializing him. Says Johnson, “From the beginning, it was different people’s ethnic groups, different cultures, but also it was all these different art forms put together.”

After its inception, many artists were inspired to continue, growing the Procession into its modern incarnation. Today we find ourselves organizing well over 150,000 participants on the streets of downtown Tucson for a two-mile long human-powered procession that ends in the ceremonial burning of “The Urn”.

The Urn is filled with the hopes, offerings and wishes of the public for those who have passed.Myriad altars, performers, installation art, and creatives of all kinds collaborate to prepare their offerings for this amazing event. The All Souls Procession Weekend is Honors the Ancestors and our lost loved ones and Celebrates Life.

2) Cowboy cookout at Tanque Verde Ranch

We LOVE the cowboy cookout at Tanque Verde Ranch, and it’s one of our favorite dinner spots to take out-of-town guests. It’s outdoors, so we can enjoy the dreamy Tucson fall weather, they have live music, a BBQ buffet (the cobbler is to.die.for), and the BEST prickly pear margaritas. Even better? Turn it into a little staycation!

3) Sonoran Desert Museum

Our Desert Museum is truly a unique Tucson experience, and when the weather is nicer, you can see more animals. There’s a gorgeous butterfly exhibit, and you have the chance to see desert foxes, javelinas, scorpions (AHH), and other desert creatures up close and personal. This one is a huge hit with the kids. It’s a bit of a drive, but it’s worth it!

4) Marana Pumpkin Patch & Farm Festival

Marana has really upped its game in the past few years, and what used to be a smaller pumpkin patch with a petting zoo and a couple of activities has turned into a full-out fall festival. They have multiple rides (including swings, slides, a Corn-ado spinning ride, and a train), lots of amazing food, games, and activities for the entire family. Definitely check it out! A little insider tip: go at the beginning of the season instead of closer to Halloween.

5) Apple Annie’s Produce and Pumpkins

Apple Annie’s is an orchard and farm located in Williams, AZ (about an hour and 15 minutes from Tucson). You can pick your own produce, including apples and peaches, and they also have a corn maze and craft fair to look forward to in September and October. Get the pie – you won’t regret it!

6) Tucson Meet Yourself Festival

October 4,5,6 2024 in Downtown Tucson. Three days of music, dance, folk arts, and food from Tucson’s many cultures. My family and I refer to this event as Tucson Eat Yourself, because you’ll just go and eat all of the delicious food, including elote, kettle corn, tacos, and shaved ice from many street vendors. While you enjoy your meal, you can watch some of the performances from local musicians and dancers, representing a variety of cultures.

7) Tombstone Hellorado Days

We haven’t taken the kids to Tombstone yet, but I feel like they’re the perfect ages, especially since Liv is very into history. Helldorado is held every third Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October and consists of gunfight re-enactment shows, street entertainment, fashion shows, and other entertainment.

8) Reid Park Zoo

We have a small zoo here in Tucson, which makes it ideal for spending an hour or two with kids. They usually host a Halloween event with elaborate light displays and trick-or-treating stations.

9) A trail ride at TRAK or Tanque Verde Ranch

A trail ride is the perfect way to enjoy the weather, spend some time outdoors, and enjoy a novel experience you may not get to do all the time (unless you’re P, who is a professional). Both TRAK and Tanque Verde Ranch offer trial rides for various riding experience levels and lengths of time.

10) Mount Lemmon Oktoberfest

Mount Lemmon is a Tucson treasure. It’s 45 minutes to an hour away, and the scenery changes dramatically. You leave cacti and brown dirt for enormous pine trees, greenery, and much cooler weather (20-30 degrees colder!). They have an Oktoberfest event, or you can even head up for the day to picnic, hike, and enjoy pizza and a cookie from the Cookie Cabin.

11) Pima Air and Space Museum

This is another one of our spots to take out-of-town guests, particularly because the Pilot has a couple of plaques and patches on display. It’s fun to see the various aircraft, especially with our Tucson Davis-Monthan Air Force Base history, and the exhibits are amazing.

12) Live music in downtown Tucson at Hotel Congress Plaza

Hotel Congress frequently has live music on the weekends, and it’s a great place to enjoy a cocktail and some music/dancing. They feature local artists and also small booths from artisans, including handmade accessories and jewelry. Bonus: have dinner at BATA and then head to Hotel Congress for music and drinks.

13) Buckelew Farm Terror in the Corn Maze

Buckelew Farm is a bit of a hike (around an hour) and they have a huge pumpkin patch + haunted attractions if that’s your thing (it’s not my thing lol). You can check out the details here if you’re looking for a spookier experience.

14) Hike Sabino Canyon

Sabino Canyon is my favorite hiking destination in Tucson. You can explore many of the trails, or take a tram ride to the top and walk down. Don’t forget to check out All Trails and a full guide to hiking Sabino Canyon here. You can often see water and wildlife on the trail, and the views are spectacular.

15) Gaslight fall show- The Wizard of the Rings

Gaslight is another Tucson treasure! Their melodramas are always loosely based on popular shows and movies, and the audience is encouraged to cheer for the hero and boo for the villain. They serve popcorn and a full 50s diner menu as you enjoy the show.

16) Visit the Tuscon Botanical Gardens

Get ready to leaf your worries behind and immerse yourself in a vibrant kaleidoscope of autumn colors at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. From wandering through the enchanting Japanese garden to marveling at the blooming desert plants, this oasis is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Plus, rumor has it that even the squirrels do some burpee workouts to stay fit amidst all those trees!

17) Picnic at Agua Caliente Park

Pack your picnic basket and head on over to Agua Caliente Park for some fall fun under the Tucson sky. With sprawling green fields, picturesque ponds, and soothing hot springs, it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind. Just make sure those autumn winds don’t carry away your sandwiches – trust me, I speak from experience!

18) Mission San Xavier del Bac

Journey back in time and explore the stunning Mission San Xavier del Bac, a true architectural gem nestled in the heart of southern Arizona. Marvel at the intricate details of this centuries-old Spanish mission, and you’ll soon feel a sense of tranquility envelop you. Fun fact: Did you know that this mission was actually built by hand, brick by brick? Talk about dedication!

Remember, these are just a few of the fall wonders you can experience in Tucson, AZ. So grab your hiking boots, pack some water, and prepare to embrace the perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure. And hey, if you spot any squirrels doing lunges on the hiking trails, make sure to give them a thumbs-up for staying fit in the desert heat!

What are some local fall events that you look forward to each year?

Hormonal health tips for women over 35

Sharing some hormonal health tips for women over 35.

Hi friends! How are you? I hope you’re enjoying the day so far! It’s a busy week over here. The PIlot’s bday was yesterday, P’s is tomorrow, and today I have some podcast interviews, lunch with a friend, and a concert tonight 🙂 I hope you’re enjoying the week!

One of the things I commonly hear with friends and clients is that after you turn 35, things aren’t quite the same. The strategies that used to work may feel like they’re no longer working, metabolism may feel like it’s broken, sleep can go haywire, and energy levels are decreased.

The good news is that there are things you can do to support your body through the stress you’re experiencing. As our bodies navigate changes over time, it becomes paramount to foster hormonal health for overall well-being.

In today’s post, I wanted to share some essential tips and strategies to support hormonal harmony and promote a vibrant, fulfilling life after 35.

Hormonal health tips for women over 35

1. Prioritize Balanced Nutrition:

Nutrition is the cornerstone of hormonal well-being. Opt for a well-rounded diet that includes a variety of nutrient-dense foods. Embrace whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, and a kaleidoscope of fruits and vegetables. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, can be particularly beneficial for hormonal balance.

2. Mindful Hydration:

Water is not just a basic necessity; it’s a fundamental supporter of hormonal health. Stay well-hydrated by aiming for at least eight glasses of water a day. Additionally, consider incorporating herbal teas with hormonal benefits into your routine, such as chamomile or peppermint.

3. Regular Exercise:

Exercise is a potent ally in maintaining hormonal equilibrium. Engage in a diverse range of activities, including cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility work. Finding activities you genuinely enjoy ensures consistency, as regular exercise aids in stress management, mood enhancement, and hormonal regulation.

4. Quality Sleep Matters:

Adequate, quality sleep is a non-negotiable factor in hormonal health. Strive for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Establish a calming pre-sleep routine, limit screen time before bed, and create an optimal sleep environment. Quality sleep supports the production of growth hormone and helps regulate cortisol levels.

5. Manage Stress Effectively:

Stress can disrupt the delicate dance of hormonal balance. Integrate stress-management techniques into your daily routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness practices. Experiment with different methods to discover what resonates most with you and make it an integral part of your daily life.

6. Consider Hormone Testing:

As you navigate the milestones beyond 35, staying informed about your hormonal health is empowering. This insight can guide personalized strategies to address specific hormonal imbalances should they arise. I’m so thrilled to be able to work with clients 1:1 on on a variety of functional labs. If you’re interested, you can apply here.

7. Supportive Supplements:

Certain supplements can complement a healthy lifestyle in supporting hormonal health. Vitamin D, magnesium, and omega-3 supplements are often considered beneficial. However, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating any new supplements into your routine to ensure they align with your individual health needs. Also, it’s important to remember that you can’t out-supplement your lifestyle and habits. Those are #1!

8. Cultivate Healthy Relationships:

Social connections and healthy relationships contribute significantly to emotional well-being. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family, and actively nurture your emotional health. Positive relationships can have a profound impact on stress levels and overall hormonal balance.

9. Listen to Your Body:

Your body is a wise communicator. Pay attention to changes in your menstrual cycle, energy levels, mood, and any unusual symptoms. If something feels off, trust your intuition and don’t hesitate to consult with a healthcare professional.

10. Celebrate Self-Care:

Self-care is not an indulgence; it’s a necessity. Dedicate time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a warm bath, or enjoying a favorite hobby, prioritize self-care to nourish your mind, body, and spirit.

Remember, hormonal health is an ongoing journey, and these tips are guiding lights along the way.

By embracing these practices and honoring your body’s natural rhythms, you empower yourself to navigate the beautiful evolution of womanhood beyond 35. Here’s to radiant health, vibrant energy, and the wisdom that gracefully unfolds with each passing year. <3

Halloween Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Sharing some festive ways to enjoy rice crispies this Halloween season!

With the spookiest day of the year just around the corner, I can feel the excitement in the air. Halloween isn’t just about costumes and pumpkins; it’s a fun time to bake up some tasty treats!

Today, I’m sharing a delightful Halloween Rice Krispie Treats recipe—a perfect blend of gooey, crispy goodness that will surely add a touch of magic to your Halloween festivities. Rice crispies are one of my all-time favorite treats; they’re gluten-free, SO delicious, easy to customize, and the kids love them.

Halloween Rice Krispie Treats Ideas

Spooky Shapes and Silhouettes

Transform your ordinary Rice Krispie Treats into Halloween-themed shapes. Use cookie cutters to mold them into ghosts, bats, or pumpkins. The kids will love getting involved in this creative process. For an extra eerie touch, add black food coloring to the mix.

How-to: Shape the freshly made Rice Krispie mixture with cookie cutters. Enhance the details with a piping bag filled with different colored icing.

Monster Mashup Madness

Unleash your imagination by turning your Rice Krispie Treats into a parade of friendly monsters. Use candy eyes, colorful icing, and various candies to create a variety of goofy, spooky, or silly monsters. It’s a fun way to get creative and like a little art project for the kiddos.

How-to: Decorate each treat with candy eyes, colored icing for features, and candies for added texture. Make each monster unique for a vibrant and playful Halloween treat.

Haunted Graveyard Delight

Take your Halloween Rice Krispie Treats to the next level by turning them into a haunted graveyard scene. Use crushed chocolate cookies for “dirt,” gummy worms for added spookiness, and small tombstone-shaped cookies for decoration.

How-to: Assemble the graveyard by placing tombstone cookies and gummy worms on top of the Rice Krispie surface. Dust with crushed cookies for a graveyard-inspired look.

Halloween Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 package (10 ounces) marshmallows

6 cups crispy rice cereal

Cooking spray

Food coloring (optional) – I like this food coloring. It’s not as vibrant, but contains veggie-based color instead of artificial dye.

Candy eyes

Various Halloween candies and sprinkles for decorating. Candy corn and Halloween m&ms are great add-ins, too

Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Base

Begin by melting 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large pot on medium heat. Add the marshmallows and stir well until fully melted. If you’re feeling extra festive, add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture. This gives your treats a Halloween-themed hue.

Stir in the crispy rice cereal until well-coated. Feel free to add in any sprinkles or candy here, too.

Step 2: Shaping the Treats

Press the mixture into a greased and wax paper-lined pan. Use a spatula or your hands (sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking) to evenly spread and flatten the mixture.

Step 3: Decorating with Creativity

Once the base has set, decorate your treats with candy eyes, sprinkles, and a variety of Halloween candies. Feel free to experiment with different shapes and designs.

Step 4: Cutting and Displaying

Allow your treats to cool completely before cutting them into desired shapes. Place them on a Halloween-themed platter or wrap them individually in wax paper for easy sharing.

Step 6: Dive In and Enjoy!

The best part of any recipe! Rice crispie treats also freeze well, so you can freeze in container, separating layers with wax paper. Keep at room temperature for an hour or so before serving.

Flourless Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars

Re-sharing this post because it’s a yearly staple for us and I know so many of you love them, too!! These flourless pumpkin chocolate chip bars are SO good and I usually have all of the ingredients for this healthy fall dessert on hand and ready to go.

Let the avalanche of all things pumpkin continue.

Flourless pumpkin chocolate chip bars! a holiday treat that's secretly packed with nutrition and under 200 calories per serving

I feel like this year, a lot of people are playing it cool when it comes to pumpkin. You know, trying not to act *too* excited about its arrival. (Also it could totally be the fact that many of us are still experiencing true summer weather.) And then, there are people like me who have already enjoyed many PSLs, and upon seeing the shelf of pumpkin-filled cans at Trader Joe’s, I did the slow-mo run to them, arms wide open, and a creepy smile on my face.

I just can’t help myself.

While the Pilot doesn’t go crazy for pumpkin at all, I gave birth to two pumpkin-obsessed little friends, who share my enthusiasm for this festive gourd.

Flourless Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars

This afternoon, I decided to embark on my first pumpkin baking adventure of the season, with chocolate chip pumpkin bars. It was a twist on my beloved flourless blueberry breakfast bake (recipe is in the book!), and uses creamy almond butter and egg as the base. The result: a dense, buttery, perfectly spiced, and sweet healthy pumpkin dessert or snack. It’s also amazing in the morning with some butter and a side of scrambled eggs.

Friday Faves 10.20

Hi friends! Happy Friday! How was the week? I hope you had a great one. What’s going on this weekend? We have an event for the girls’ school, Trunk or Treat, and we’re celebrating the Pilot’s bday a little early (and yes, his favorite cake is on the menu). I’d love to hear what you have going on!

Workwise, I’ve been doing a ton of functional testing for clients lately. As much as I love workout programming, this is close competition for being my favorite work-related task. I LOVE going through all of the data and creating custom action plans. I put on some binaural beats, sprawl out on the PEMF Go Mat (my code is FITNESSISTA15), and go through EVERYTHING. If you’ve been curious about functional testing as a 1:1 client, please let me know; I have three spots left as we wrap up 2023.

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below!

(pics to an art show we attended by the Boys and Girls Club. I got the sweetest greeting cards and a javelina painting for P’s room! Dress is here and P is still loving her Vivobarefoots.)

What little things in your home are just for you?

Fashion + beauty:

Shopbop sale is here! It’s a tiered sale, so the more you spend, the more you save. You can get up to 25% off.

Here are some of my favorite picks:

This floral dress would be gorgeous with heels or booties

This jumpsuit (I have another Pistola jumpsuit in red and love it)

These recycled leather pants – so cute for fall and holiday parties

 These wide leg pants

These straight jeans

This nude slip dress

These bow earrings

LOVE the cut of these ALC dresses (size up)

This black maxi

These drop earrings

Fitness, health, and good eats:

EquiLife has COFFEE! When they launched this past week, I was so pumped about it. Ever since I learned about how coffee is process, particularly how it’s decaffeinated, I’ve been pretty strategic about my coffee choices. I switched to decaf in the morning a few years ago, and when we got our Nespresso, I started drinking the organic pods since the taste of the decaf is horrible.

I’m so excited to try something new that’s free from the pesticides and mold that can negate the positive health benefits of coffee.

Here’s what’s exciting about this one:

Providing more than double the antioxidants found in blueberries

Contains Chlorogenic Acids (CGAs), a superior form of antioxidants

Effective at scavenging free radicals & preventing cell damage

Increases brain function & supports healthy levels of inflammation

Organic, single source coffee

Free from pesticides & mold

Whole bean, available in both regular (Revive) & decaf (Relax)

You can get a free bag of it here with a purchase of $99! (I would do a detox kit and a box of their chocolate brownie snack bars. You’ll have some tasty snacks and be ready for our community detox on January 8th! Use the code FITNESSISTA10 for 10% off, too.)

LOVE the Simple Mills protein pancake mix. It’s so good and the edges are a little crispy.

They’re especially amazing with berries on top and a side of chicken sausage.

Cinnamon apple pie ice cream.

Interesting links between seasons and metabolism.

You have to try this pumpkin baked oatmeal.

Happy Friday, friends! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today and I’ll see ya soon!

Tips For Hosting A Dinner Party

Sharing my top tips for hosting an awesome dinner party + some of my favorite cooking hacks.

Hi hi! How’s the morning going? I’m off to mass with the kids and then hitting an F45 class. I hope you have a great day, too.

For today’s post, I thought we could talk a bit about dinner party tips and cooking hacks. Please keep in mind that I’m NOT a professional (even though we have some people in my family who are professional cooks and others who cook like they’re professionals). I’m just a home cook who enjoys it and also happens to LOVE feeding people. When the Pilot and I first got married, a friend said I needed a kitchen sign that said, “Never leave hungry” because that seemed to be my motto. It brings me so much joy to enjoy awesome meals and good times with the people we love. So, we love having friends and family members over whenever we can.

Over time, I’ve learned some good dinner party tips and cooking hacks, so I wanted to share with ya this morning.

Dinner party tips and cooking hacks

15 Tips For Hosting A Dinner Party

Make anything you can in advance

I learned this one from my nana, who will make and freeze as many meal components as possible before a family get-together. She used to own a catering company, so she’s pretty used to making large quantities of amazing food.

Anything you can make before a party, do it. This means things like dips, desserts, side dishes, anything. I usually try to pre-make anything I can, so I’m not cooking as people are arriving.

I learned this one the hard way. We invited friends over the first time we lived in Valdosta, and I hadn’t prepared a single thing. When our guests arrived, they all ended up sitting at the dinner table as I ran around the kitchen, stressed, and sweating from the hot stove and burners. Learn from my mistake, friends.

Never try a new recipe the night of a dinner party

It can be tempting to want to try a cool new recipe you see on social media or a website, but always give it a test run before serving it to another group of people. I’ve had a handful of Pinterest fails that I thought would be good ideas, and I’m so glad I took the time to try them out in advance. Serve options that you can cook easily and that you know are a hit.

Set the menu strategically

Check in with your guest list to see if there are any dietary restrictions. Plan out the menu in advance depending on the occasion and theme of the dinner party, plus how many guests you’ll have in attendance. For example, a smaller dinner party would do well with plated options, while larger parties are better for family-style dishes or a buffet setup.

Put post-its on serving dishes and set everything out the night before

I clean the kitchen the night before or the morning of the get-together and put out all of the nice sets of plates, silverware, and serving dishes. I put a post-it note (“salsa,” “chips,” “guac,” etc.) in each large serving dish so I know where everything is going. Set the table in advance, too.

Empty the dishwasher before everyone comes over

This way it’s easy to add dishes into the dishwasher as they get dirty and run it at the end of the night.

Serve one signature drink or cocktail

I like to always have a special type of drink in addition to the usual La Croix, waters, beers, and an assortment of bottles of wine. It might be something like sangria, house margaritas, or this type of cocktail. Make a large batch and store it in the fridge and also ensure you have plenty of drinks on hand for everyone.

Cocktail Tips For Hosting A Dinner Party

Meat thermometer

Meat thermometers are a GAME CHANGER and help to avoid dry, overcooked meat. It’s so much easier to poke the meat and know that it’s finished cooking.

Taste the guacamole on a chip

When you’re making guacamole, you’re going to serve it with chips, so don’t forget to taste test on a chip. Otherwise, you may make the guac too salty.

If you enjoy Mexican food, get thee a tortilla warmer ASAP

You will never have cold tortillas with warm glorious Mexican food again. You put the tortillas in the warmer, pop it in the microwave, and the warmer keeps them hot while you’re serving.

Set the ambiance

I like to light some candles before everyone comes over, turn on the sparkly lights outside, and get some music going. I’ll put some music on Spotify on the TV and the Bluetooth speaker outside. This way the vibe is already set for my guests to relax and enjoy themselves!

Write out a cooking schedule

This way you won’t be thinking about it all night and can enjoy the party. I like to plan a schedule for the day leading up to it, including which items will be prepared at each time, and small reminders, like “take out the trash,” “ice the drinks,” and “turn on the music.”

Use the oven!

Bake or roast part of the meal, and this way you can put anything you’ve made in advance directly into the oven. Once it’s cooked, turn the oven down and keep it warm in the oven before serving.

Don’t make everything yourself

I LOVE this tip and it’s such a simple way to remove some of the stress from doing allllllll the things. There’s nothing wrong with having some store-bought items if you can’t make it yourself or don’t have the time. Find a couple of options you can outsource from a local spot, like sides, dessert, or a charcuterie board.

Always cut out a piece of a cake

Guests won’t want to cut into something but will eat it if it’s already cut. The same goes for cheeses on a cheese board, so cut out some slices in advance.

If you can read, you can cook

These were words of wisdom from my nana, after emailing her to tell her I was struggling in the kitchen. When we first got married, I had to learn how to cook and there were so many fiascos along the way. (Once I made a meatloaf that turned into sloppy joes, which we called “sloppy loaf.” Delicious.)

She said to take my time, and if you can read directions, you can cook. It gave me confidence to keep going and I eventually fell in love with cooking.

Overcoming challenges to consistent fitness routines

Sharing tips and strategies on how to overcome challenges that get in the way of maintaining a regular fitness routine.

Hi friends! I hope you’re having a great morning so far. I have an in-person meeting and a podcast interview. Counting down to the weekend and the Pilot’s bday celebration!

For today’s post, I wanted to talk about some common fitness hurdles and share some strategies for overcoming them.

We’ve all been there—the excitement of setting fitness goals, the burst of energy during the first few weeks, and then life happens. Suddenly, those well-intentioned plans are upended, and the road to consistent fitness feels like an uphill climb.

Overcoming challenges to consistent fitness routines

Here are some of the things that can get in the way of the best fitness plans and squash that initial excitement. The good news is that you can shift your mindset, show yourself grace, and make fitness a consistent part of your routine, even with obstacles along the way.

1. Life’s Unexpected Twists:

Life is beautifully unpredictable, and that unpredictability can throw a wrench into our workout routines. Whether it’s unexpected work demands, family emergencies, or just the general chaos of daily life, it’s crucial to acknowledge that flexibility is a cornerstone of consistency. Embrace the ebb and flow, and remember that a missed workout doesn’t define your fitness journey. Go for a “grand scheme of things” approach. What are you doing MOST of the time? Look at the forest, not the tree, when you’re confronted with an extraordinary situation.

2. The All-or-Nothing Mentality:

Hands in the air if you’ve ever thought, “Well, I missed one workout, might as well start fresh next week.” The all-or-nothing mentality can be a major stumbling block. Fitness is not an all-or-nothing game; it’s a journey of small, sustainable steps. If you miss a workout or indulge in a treat, it’s not a reason to give up. Every positive choice counts. Also, sometimes you need to miss a workout, and sometimes your soul needs the treat. Live in the happy grey area; it’s much more sustainable than black and white thinking.

3. Mental and Emotional Hurdles:

Sometimes, the biggest challenges are the ones we can’t see. Stress, anxiety, and low motivation can be formidable opponents. Acknowledging and addressing these mental and emotional hurdles is an essential part of consistent fitness. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices, seeking support from friends or a therapist, and reminding yourself that taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical health. Do things that bring you joy, and make sure your fitness routine gives you space for a hobby you love, time to connect with loved ones, and rest/recovery time.

4. Monotony and Boredom:

Doing the same workout day in and day out can quickly become monotonous. If your fitness routine feels like a chore, it’s time for a change. Mix things up with new exercises, try different classes, or take your workout outdoors. Variety not only keeps things interesting but also challenges your body (and brain!) in new ways. If you’re looking for something to spice up your routine, join us in Fit Team!

5. Setting Realistic Goals:

Setting lofty, unrealistic goals can set you up for disappointment. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on setting achievable, realistic goals. Celebrate small victories, and understand that progress takes time. Consistency, not perfection, is the key to lasting results. Celebrate each win, and build habits gradually, so you don’t feel like you’re making a huge overhaul at once.

6. Creating a Support System:

We’re not meant to tackle challenges alone. Having a support system—whether it’s a workout buddy, an online fitness community, or a supportive friend—can make a world of difference. Surround yourself with people who uplift and motivate you on your fitness journey.

Remember, the road to consistent fitness is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s about making sustainable choices, learning from setbacks, and embracing the journey with all its twists and turns.

You’ve got this!!

What’s your current biggest fitness or health hurdle?
