Friday Faves 12.8

Hi friends! Happy Saturday! What are you up to this weekend? We’re spending time with some of our favorite friends: dinner and Botanical gardens, stocking stuffer event, Waitress the Musical, and then pasta making and dinner. I’d love to hear what you’re up to!

Some random pics from the week:

Before we get into Friday Faves, a couple of quick notes:

THANK YOU x1000000 to those of you who have filled out my annual survey. Your feedback is invaluable to me and it’s made me so excited to start working on 2024 content. Please share your thoughts here!

You still have time to enter this year’s favorite things giveaway!!

If you’d like to be a holiday elf and support some children this year, check out this link to gift the Keiki of Maui. These are all children who were directly affected by the August wildfires in Maui, many of whom lost their homes and all of their belongings. This page includes links to their Amazon wishlists, which will be shipped directly to the organization.

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves roundup (just a little delayed posting on a Saturday) This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Friday Faves 12.8

Health, fitness, and good eats:

– I was invited to teach at the Fuel for Finals event at the University of Arizona for the College of Fine Arts. It was such a great event: a coffee cart, therapy dog, juice shots, snacks, a yoga class, and a mobility + stretching class (this is the one I taught) to help students unwind in between finals. Here is the playlist I used! We did a 45-minute mobility flow with lots of dynamic and static stretching, plus an extra-long savasana.

– Fire cider. The crew and I picked this up at the farmer’s market last weekend. I’ve been a huge fan of fire cider for years (especially during this time of year) and now I’m inspired to try to make my own.

Fashion + beauty:

LOVING these new NOW products. I’m always blown away by the quality for the price, with excellent ingredients. Serum is here and eye cream is here (use code FITNESSISTA)

This Amazon sweater! So cute and inexpensive.

(with these pants and these shoes)

Here are this week’s top gift guide picks:

These cute joggers

Everyday Chelsea boots

This swimsuit that I bought years ago and still love

The best half-zip

An amazing gift for any pet lover

The gift that will make any little kid’s whole year

Still my favorite leggings

A perfect stocking stuffer for your husband or partner

A Barbie dream house

This kids’ ruffle sweatshirt

You can check out my gift guide for her, for him, for the kids, and health and fitness gifts. Skincare faves, tweens, and under $100 are coming next week!

Read, watch, listen:

– We watched The Family Switch on Netflix the other night and all loved it. It was heartwarming, funny, appropriate for the little one, and the perfect amount of holiday cheer. Definitely recommend it!

Check out this week’s podcast episode here!

– I’ve been reading Fourth Wing and while it sucked me in initially, it’s dragon a bit (couldn’t help it lolz)… trying to get through it because I know it picks up at the end.

Happy Friday friends!

146: Metabolic health and biohacking with Joshua Kreifels, RD

Hi friends! How’s the week going so far? I’m so excited because I have a new podcast up with Josh Kreifels. I follow the account that he shares with his wife over on Instagram, and love their approach to healthy living. I align with a lot of his values and messaging, and am so thrilled to have him on the show today.

Here’s what we talk about:

Metabolic health

prioritizing health with a busy schedule

biohacks for anti-aging/longevity

and so much more.

146: Metabolic health and biohacking with Joshua Kreifels, RD

Here’s a bit more about Josh:

Josh Kreifels is the founder of kreifwell functional medicine along with his wife Kristina. He is a masters level trained registered dietitian focused on helping you use food as medicine. Josh is passionate about NOT telling you what to eat, but instead teaching you how to eat in order to optimize health, function and longevity. He is best known for helping women with hypothyroid address the root cause and reduce symptoms, increase energy and improve body composition.

Connect with Josh and Tina on Instagram here, check out their website, and use this link to book a free discovery call.

More resources from this episode:

I love love love the meals from Sakara LifeUse this link and the code XOGINAH for 20% off their meal delivery and clean boutique items. This is something I do once a month as a lil treat to myself and the meals are always showstoppers.

If any of my fellow health professional friends are looking for another way to help their clients, I highly recommend IHP. You can also use this information to heal yourself and then go one to heal others, which I think is a beautiful mission. You can absolutely join if you don’t currently work in the health or fitness industry; many IHPs don’t begin on this path. They’re friends who are passionate to learn more about health and wellness, and want to share this information with those they love. You can do this as a passion, or start an entirely new career.

You can use my referral link here and the code FITNESSISTA for up to $250 off the Integrative Health Practitioner program. I highly recommend it! You can check out my review IHP Level 1 here and my review of Level 2 here.

I’m still obsessed with my sauna blanket. This is one of my favorite ways to relax and sweat it out. I find that it energizes me, helps with aches and pains, I sleep better on the days I use this, and it makes my skin glow. Link to check it out here. You can also use my discount FITNESSISTA15 for the PEMF Go Mat, which I use every day, and the red light face mask, which is a staple in my weekly skincare routine.

Get 20% off Organifi with the code FITNESSISTA. I drink the green juice, red juice, gold, and Harmony! (Each day I might have something different, or have two different things. Everything I’ve tried is amazing.)

Thank you so much for listening and for all of your support with the podcast! Please be sure to subscribe, and leave a rating or review if you enjoyed this episode. If you leave a rating, head to this page and you’ll get a little “thank you” gift from me to you.

2023 Fitness and Health Gift Guide

Sharing a holiday gift guide filled with ideas for your health and fitness-loving friends… or yourself.

Hi friends! How are you? I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far! I taught at a fun event on campus yesterday and we had an amazing holiday dinner with friends.

For today’s post, I’m popping in to share some holiday gift ideas focused on health and wellness. I’m a huge believer that all you need to improve your health is a safe place to walk, some sneakers that fit well, a good water bottle, a plan, and the dedication to stick to the promises you make to yourself. All of these gadgets and extras are an expense, and definitely classified as “nice to have” instead of “need.” At the same time, they can be super fun, provide extra insight into what’s working in your routine, and the PERFECT thing to gift someone you love (including yourself!!)

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite health and wellness gift ideas at various price points:

2023 Fitness and Health Gift Guide

Walking pad. I use my walking pad every.single.day and it’s such a great way to get in extra movement and steps, especially during long conference calls (when I don’t have to talk), emails, and watching modules.

HigherDOSE sauna blanket or PEMF Go Mat. These are two of my all-time favorite biohacking products. (You can use the code FITNESSISTA15 for 15% off)

Rebounder

An Aviron rower! This one is definitely a home gym investment, but I LOVE this thing. It’s so fun to row and be able to stream shows from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Disney+. I can’t wait to watch the new Bridgerton season in the sauna blanket and on the rower. My review of the Aviron rower is here.

Water purifier- We use Berkey and Clearly Filtered. We’re getting a Radiant Life whole house system this year!

Oura Ring. The Oura ring provides excellent data on sleep and recovery. You can check out my full review here.

Air purifier! Clean air and clean water and some of the first initial steps for 1:1 clients.

Water bottle. My top ones right now are Stanley (of course) and Hydroflask. The girls have water bottles from lululemon and they love them.

Theragun. These are fantastic for sore muscles!

Neck stretcher. This feels amazing on a tight neck, especially after a long day at the computer. I just lie on the stretcher and breathe for a few minutes.

Peloton bike or treadmill. Check out my full review of the Peloton bike here.

lululemon hoodie. You can’t go wrong with a scuba hoodie!

Vivobarefoot shoes. Once I switched over to barefoot shoes last year, all of my *regular* shoes feel so restrictive. I have a pair of athletic barefoot shoes, hiking boots, and casual white low tops. P has switched over to the vivobarefoot train and they’re her favorite sneakers. My referral link gets you 15% off.

A Sakara or Daily Harvest delivery. What a way to make healthy eating SO much easier. I love the Sakara meals – I have one coming next week!- and you can use XOGINAH for 20% off. You can use FITNESSISTA for up to $40 at Daily Harvest. I have their smoothies almost day, and also love their soups, bowls, flatbreads, and the new pasta!

Friday Faves 8.12

Class pack to a fitness studio. Pick out a favorite studio (or a new one that’s opening) and send some classes their way.

Manduka mat or mat towel. This is perfect for the yogi who has been practicing on the same mat forever, or needs a new towel to swap into the rotation.

A Breville juicer. I always say I’m going to juice more often and then I continue to buy them lol. It’s SO much more cost effective to make juices at home, and you can customize them according to your preferences.

Vuori daily leggings and a half-zip. Vuori is one of my favorite athletic brands right now; the quality is incredible, and I prefer the colors and styles over lululemon’s current selections.

A Hatch light. This was one of my Christmas gifts last year and I love it so much. It felt very jarring to wake up to my alarm each day, and since I’ve been mindful about my morning cortisol levels, this has helped a ton. It’s more peaceful to wake up to gentle light and birds chirping than a blaring alarm.

A weighted blanket. I’m the person who travels with my weighted blanket lol. It makes a huge difference in my sleep quality.

Tell me, friends: what’s your favorite wellness tool, gadget, or on your personal wish list this year?

xoxo

The Best Gluten-Free Brownies

Fudgy and delicious, these are the best gluten-free brownies! They’re actually the best brownies ever, gluten-free or not! I’m so excited to share the recipe with you and hope you love them as much as I do! This is an older post that got a little photo refresh.. and we got to eat a ton of brownies.

Best Gluten-Free Brownies

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup brown rice flour mix (see below) OR 1/6 tapioca flour + 1/6 potato starch + 1/3 brown rice flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (or vegan butter)
  • 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs (can also use flax eggs)
  • 3/4 cup chopped toasted walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 325. Position rack in lower-middle of oven.
  2. Line a 8 in square baking pan with foil and grease with cooking spray.
  3. Combine flour, salt, baking powder and xanthan gum in a small bowl and set aside.
  4. Melt chocolate and butter in a double boiler (or melt in the microwave for about 45 seconds, stirring every 15 seconds).
  5. Whisk in sugar, vanilla and eggs, one at a time. Continue to whisk until mixture is smooth and glossy.
  6. Add flour mixture and whisk until incorporated.
  7. Stir in nuts (if you wish to add them).
  8. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with wet crumbs.
  9. Cool in pan on rack for 5 minutes.
  10. Remove brownies from pan by lifting up foil and cool completely on rack.
  11. Cut into squares or triangles.

The quality of the chocolate makes the difference, so I picked these adorable Tcho baking critters. They’re almost too cute to melt!

Tcho baking critters

Check out this cute little hedgehog:

After melting the chocolate in the microwave (for about 45 seconds, stirring every 15 seconds), I whisked in the sugar, butter, egg and vanilla until thoroughly combined and shiny.

Then I added the flour mix. I like to keep a gluten-free flour mix on hand (recipe below), but you could also wing it on the spot. I filled a 1/3 measuring cup halfway with potato starch and halfway with tapioca flour, then filled another 1/3 measuring cup with with brown rice flour.

Whisked it all together

Then poured the batter into a greased baking dish.

gluten-free homemade brownies

There’s a trick you can try that will save you cleanup and help you cut your brownies better: Line the baking dish with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray. When they’re done and have cooled for a bit, you pull the whole thing out – aluminum foil and all – let it cool, then cut it up.

Either way, you’ll have delicious, fudgy gluten-free brownies.

the best gluten-free brownies

These gluten-free brownies are especially delicious with a scoop of coconut milk ice cream on top. Your family might just go so nuts over these that there will be very little left to enjoy the next day.

Gluten-Free Brown Rice Flour Mix

Ingredients

  • 2 C Brown rice flour
  • 2/3 C Potato Starch (not flour)
  • 1/3 C Tapioca Flour (also known as starch)

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together and store in an airtight container to use as needed.

Looking for a flourless brownie? Here’s a sweet potato brownie recipe to try!

If you’d like to satisfy your brownie craving in a less treat-like fashion, try these brownie batter protein bites.

Friday Faves 12.1 and Arkansas fun

Hi friends! Happy Friday! How was the week? I hope you’ve had a great one. Ours went by quickly — part of it was spent in Arkansas and then we flew back home to Tucson.

We had a wonderful time with family and enjoyed so many fun adventures.

Some highlights:

the alligator farm was a HUGE hit

a beautiful hike,

strolling around and shopping in Hot Springs,

the Christmas lights at Garvan Woodland Gardens,

and lunch at The Root.

(gf chicken salad sandwich, salad, and sweet potato fries. 10/10)

What do you have going on this weekend? It’s the squadron Christmas party and we’re going to get our Christmas tree. After being team fake tree for so many years, we switched to real a few years ago and I don’t see myself going back. They smell AMAZING.

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Friday Faves 12.1 and Arkansas fun

Read, watch, listen:

Loving this audiobook so far, especially since I’ve been into rewatching old Friends episodes. It’s sad and comforting to hear his voice, and it was a loss this year that hit me pretty hard.

I watched Falling for Christmas on Netflix while wrapping gifts – trying to get everything done early – and I have to admit… it was great.

Check out this week’s podcast episode here!

Fitness + good eats:

15 festive holiday cocktail recipes.

You have to try these crunchy almond butter truffles.

How cute are these ballerina flats?

Kind of into the fact that bootcut jeans are back.

Winter Break Activities with Kids

Hi friends! How’s the week going? We’re off on a little staycation – check out my IG stories for pics and adventures! – but for today’s post, I thought I’d share some fun activities to do with the kids while they’re home for Christmas break.

Insert MAJOR sigh of relief and all the cheer for Christmas break. I love having the kiddos home, and especially love zero alarms (except for the days I have to teach), slow mornings, and seeing where the day takes us. Our weeks are pretty busy around here between school, gymnastics and dance team, horse lessons, and soccer, so having a couple of weeks off lovely. (Not months off. I’m not putting that out into the universe.)

While I still have to work while the kiddos are home, I’ve been trying to pre-write as much as possible and book calls into time blocks so we can have some fun adventures while they’re home. I thought I’d share some of my top ideas here and would love to hear what you’re doing with the fam this winter break!

Winter Break Activities with Kids

Please keep in mind that these are just ideas and a brainstorming list, and there’s no way we’ll do all or most of the things here. I’m really most excited about just CHILLING, but it will be great to have the lists on the afternoons when we’re looking for something to do!

Ideas for home:

Camping in the living room

This was a huge hit when the pandemic first hit, and a way for us to distinguish the weekend from all of the other days that blended together. We’d roast s’mores, watch a movie, and sleep in a tent downstairs. I learned very quickly that I hate air mattresses lol but it was worth it for the memories for the kiddos.

Make slime

This is our go-to recipe and you can add glitter to the mixture for a sparkly snow slime

Bake something

We rarely have time to bake while the kids are in school, so this is a special opportunity to bake together

Simple In-home Science Experiments

Did you know that learning can be as entertaining as it is enlightening? With a touch of scientific flair, you and your little ones can embark on a journey through the wonderful world of winter. From creating frost on a can to making your own snow, there are countless experiments that will make their eyes sparkle brighter than a starlit winter sky. Not only will these activities engage their curious minds, but they will also provide an opportunity for you to bond with your children and share some memorable moments together. So, gather your lab coats and safety goggles – it’s time for some educational fun!

Teach them a recipe

This is one of my goals for this Christmas break! We have a gas stove, so I’m not quite comfortable with them using it yet, but I want to teach them how to make eggs and pancakes on our large griddle. It’s electric, so it will be perfect for them to make breakfast (with supervision, of course).

Go on a scavenger hunt

While it is a bit chilly, we still bundle up and take walks with Maisey each day. Create a scavenger hunt list before you head out.

Hike

You’re absolutely right – nestled amidst this magnificent desert landscape are some truly breathtaking trails that transform into a winter wonderland during this fun season. Picture this: a crisp afternoon, the air tingling with just the right amount of chill, and you and the gang embarking on an adventure to explore one of these beautiful trails. The sight of the desert adorned with a sprinkle of winter magic is a sight to behold! As you hike along the scenic paths, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views, the serenity of nature, and the joy of spending time together. It’s the perfect way to combine a fun winter activity with a touch of exploration.

(Pic from our last trip to Sedona)

Read a book and watch the movie

Liv is finishing the book Wonder, so I’m excited to watch it with the kids one of these nights. I think I may have the perfect indoor activity to accompany it. Why not gather some family friends and teach your children some important lessons about kindness and empathy while enjoying a movie night? Cozy up on the couch, grab some blankets and snacks, and witness the wonder of the story come to life on the screen. It’s a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while engaging in an enriching activity. Plus, who doesn’t love a heartwarming tale that inspires us to be our best selves?

Let them host a talent show, or have a dance party

This is one of my go-tos when I need to get some chores done — I turn on some music and the girls dance and play while I clean

Karaoke

We have this bluetooth mic and the girls looooove it.

Play a board game or card game

Zingo, Guess Who, Old Maid, and Uno are all favorites.

Make a fort

Snow Ball Fights

Ah, the magic of winter! When the world transforms into a snowy wonderland and kids come home from school with an extra pep in their step. And what better way to embrace the chilly weather than with a good old-fashioned snowball fight? Gather the family and friends, bundle up in warm layers, and let the snowballs fly! It’s a perfect time for fun and to teach children about teamwork and friendly competition. Just be prepared to dodge incoming snowballs and build your very own fortress of snow. Who says you can’t have a blast while getting a little exercise too?

Work on a puzzle

Create a year-end photo album

I’m really trying to get better about this, so this post is my motivation to do it.

Create Snow Globe

Time to unleash your inner artist and bring some winter magic into your home! Get creative with your kids and design your very own snow globe. Start by finding the perfect-sized jar or container, then let your imaginations run wild. Decorate the inside with miniature figures, a sprinkle of glittering snow, and perhaps even a tiny Christmas tree. The possibilities are endless! Not only will this activity keep the little ones entertained, but it will also provide a cozy indoor activity during those brisk winter days. And the best part? You’ll have a delightful decoration to cherish long after the snow has melted.

Ideas for adventures and excursions:

Take them to spend their holiday gift cards at Target or the mall

The arcade

Our kids LOVE the mall arcade and we always have a blast playing games for a bit

Mini-golf

The Botanical Gardens

The zoo

An aquarium

Take a short road trip or staycation

We’re fortunate that Mt. Lemmon is only an hour away, so we can see some pine trees and snow! Imagine the thrill on your children’s faces as they experience the wonder of nature up close. This is truly a bucket list item that cannot be missed! Not only will you have the opportunity to teach your little ones about the beauty of our natural world, but you’ll also create memories that will last a lifetime. So, grab your winter gear and prepare for a day filled with snowy escapades and laughter. Trust me, this is an experience that will enrich the hearts and minds of your children, and leave you with a sense of awe and appreciation for the magic of our world.

So, tell me, friends: what are you up to for winter break? Any fun activities or little trips planned?

xo
