Senior Pakistani journalist Idrees Bakhtiar passes away

KARACHI: Senior Pakistani journalist Idrees Bakhtiar passed away on Wednesday in Karachi.Idrees Bakhtiar was admitted at National Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease two days back. He underwent angioplasty and was put on ventilator after it.He died on Wednesday evening, family and friends have confirmed.The senior member of Karachi Press Club, Idrees Bakhtiar’s will be laid to rest in Karachi on Thursday.Idrees was working as Head, Editorial Committee at Geo Television November 2012.

Pakistan to stand with Saudi Arabia in all odds: Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi Wednesday categorically said Pakistan would stand with Saudi Arabia in case of any threat to the latter’s sovereignty.“Pakistan’s sovereignty is linked with the peace and stability of Saudi Arabia.It will stand with Saudi Arabia in all odds,” he said in his meeting with Saudi Acting Foreign Minister Ibrahim bin Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Assaf, on the sidelines of Meeting of Foreign Ministers’ Council of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), being held in Jeddah.Earlier, Qureshi performed Umrah in Makkah and prayed for the country’s progress and prosperity.Qureshi, who is in Saudi Arabia to participate in the ministerial meeting of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), performed Umrah and also offered Taraveeh prayers at the Holy Mosque.

PM Imran says Pakistan facing unprecedented economic crisis

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the country was facing unprecedented economic crisis.PM Imran Khan on Wednesday chaired meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at PM Office. He said that joint efforts of the Federal Government and the Provincial Governments were needed to overcome the present economic crisis. Imran Khan added “PTI Government has introduced Local Government systems in Punjab and Khyber Pkahtunkhwa to ensure empowerment of the people at grass root level and to afford them an opportunity to play their part in their developmental process.”Khan reiterated his call to the provinces to allocate necessary financial resources, as per the commitments made earlier, for the development of erstwhile FATA. The meeting reviewed Annual Plan 2018-19 and the proposed Annual Plan 2019-20. The meeting approved GDP growth target of 4% along with sectoral growth of agriculture (3.5%) industry (2.2%) and services sector (4.8%) for financial year 2019-20. NEC reviewed draft 12th Five Year Plan (2018-23). It was informed that main themes of the 12th Five Year Plan include balanced and equitable regional development; sustainable, inclusive, job-creating export-led growth; resource mobilization and improving governance; improving social protection; ensuring food and water security, enhancing connectivity, promoting knowledge economy and Clean and Green Pakistan. The NEC approved 12th Five Year Plan (2018-23), in principle. It was decided that the plan will be further fine-tuned, especially its implementation mechanism, in consultation with all stakeholders. The meeting reviewed Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2018-19 and the proposed PSDP 2019-20. It was informed that PSDP 2019-20 focuses on new initiatives in the field of agriculture, information technology, higher education, science & technology and technical education and training. The meeting was informed that targeted interventions will be made in the less developed districts of the country to bring them at par with other parts of the country for regional equalization. 10 billion Tsunami Program, Prime Minister’s Youth Skill Development Initiative, rehabilitation of affected population residing along Line of Control, construction of Gilgit-Shandur-Chitral Road and improvement of sewerage and sanitation system of Gilgit, and development of merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are some of the major priority areas of Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2019-20. The meeting approved National Development Outlay 2019-20 amounting to Rs. 1.837 trillion including Federal PSDP and Provincial ADPs. Progress Report of CDWP and ECNEC from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019 was laid before the National Economic Council. The NEC confirmed extension in powers of Special Forum for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in FATA (erstwhile) till December 2019. The Special Forum, under the Chairmanship of Commander 11 Corps, was established by the NEC on 30.05.2016 for a period of two years for fast track implementation mechanism for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in erstwhile FATA. The meeting approved establishment of Islamabad Development Working Party headed by the Chief Commissioner ICT including representatives from Ministries of Finance, Planning and other concerned offices. The IDWP will be allowed to approve development project up to Rs. 60.00 million. It approved procedure for approval of Program for Results (PforR), Development Policy Credits (DPCs) and Financial Intermediation Programs (FIPs). The meeting was attended by Adviser Finance Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Planning Minister Makhdoom Khusru Bakhtiar, Adviser Commerce Mr. Abdul Razzak Dawood, Governor KP Mr. Shah Farman, Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, CM Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mr. Mehmood Khan, CM Balochistan Mr. Jam Kamal Khan, Finance Minister Punjab Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht, Mr. Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Ms. Naheed S. Pakistani man murders HIV positive wife in epidemic-hit Larkana

KARACHI: A Pakistani man killed his HIV positive wife Wednesday in Larkana, where hundreds of people have tested positive for the virus in recent weeks, stirring panic and casting a light on the country´s dismal public health standards.Police said the murder took place in a village near the epicentre of the outbreak on the outskirts of Larkana city in Pakistan´s Sindh province, where thousands have been screened in the last month.The victim -- a 32-year-old mother of four -- tested positive in recent days, according to a local police officer, with her husband accusing her of having an extramarital affair."This morning the husband strangled (the victim) with a rope and then hung her from a tree outside his home," Roshan Ali -- a police officer in Shikarpur -- told AFP, adding that the suspect was now in custody.Shikarpur district police chief Sajid Sadozai confirmed the incident, saying an investigation into the killing was ongoing and the suspect had been booked on murder charges.Anger and fear continue to swell in the desperately poor villages and suburbs near Larkana affected by the epidemic, which authorities say could be linked to either gross negligence or malicious intent by a local doctor using tainted syringes.In rural Sindh -- long bridled by harsh poverty and illiteracy -- access to information about HIV and other diseases has kept the large swathes of the population in the dark about how the virus is transmitted.Health officials say nearly 700 people, many of them children, have tested positive in recent weeks as experts warn of a surge in infection rates across Pakistan due to the use of unsanitary equipment and rampant malpractice -- often at the hands of quack doctors.
