Renowned technologist and academician Dr Umar Saif at Digital Youth Summit’19.“We developed an app to locate and report dengue outbreaks in different regions across Punjab, capable of predicting the next dengue outbreak. In 2011, 352 people died of dengue fever in Punjab. The following year, no one died, and deaths have been minimal since then due to the simple use of this innovative app,” he explained. The revolution that Dr Saif has brought through his commendable excellence in the tech industry is what he expects to see amongst young individuals and the upcoming generation, for which he believes conferences like the Digital Youth Summit are highly essential. An initiative by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IT board, DYS provides a distinct opportunity for budding start-up owners to present their unique ideas to investors and influencers and seek guidance from reputed IT specialists, technologists from global companies like Facebook and Google who are participating at the summit to empower and educate young minds.

Pakistan hits back at India?s response to PM Imran?s UNGA speech

NEW YORK: Pakistan hit back strongly in response to Indian reply to Prime Minister Imran Khan's historic speech at the global forum.Pakistan submitted a rejoinder to the United Nations General Assembly Saturday exposing the ugly face of Narendra Modi government.First Secretary of the Indian External Affairs Ministry Vidisha Maitra while excersing her right to reply had said, "Rarely has the General Assembly witnessed such misuse, rather abuse, of an opportunity to reflect. Words matter in diplomacy. Invocation of phrases such as 'pogrom', 'bloodbath', 'racial superiority', 'pick up the gun' and 'fight to the end' reflect a medieval mindset and not a 21st-century vision." In response, Zulqarnain Chheena, a diplomat of the Pakistani mission, while exercising his right to reply said PM Imran had exposed the real cruel face of Indian state terrorism before the world community.Chheena said India is committing state terrorism in occupied Jammu and Kashmir for the last thirty years. He added the Indian government was carrying forward the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) agenda. “The killers of Mahatma Gandhi are now ruining the secular face of India in occupied Kashmir,” he asserted.Chheena further said Pakistan arrested Indian spy Kulbushan Yadev who admitted involvement in various incidents of terrorism inside Pakistan. He added, PM Imran in his speech to the UNGA, highlighted Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir and on minorities inside India.PM Imran in his address to UNGA on Friday, heavily criticised Indian PM Narendra Modi and his party’s ultra-nationalist hardline style of governance. The prime minister said that India ended the special status of occupied Kashmir, flouting 11 resolutions of the UN Security Council.“It is the responsibility of the UN to ensure that Kashmiris get their right to self-determination,” PM Imran said.“India must lift this inhuman curfew,” PM Imran said, adding, that 'picked-up persons' from the valley should be released by India.Due to these issues, eight million people under lockdown in the valley are likely to get radicalised, he said.

FM Qureshi says India putting major US interests in South Asia at stake

The Indian government is gaslighting the international community into normalizing the de facto annexation of Indian-occupied Kashmir, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday said in an opinion piece for American news outlet CNN.He warned that New Delhi was putting major US interests at stake with ethno-nationalist saber-rattling in the South Asian region."India's government wants to gaslight the international community into normalizing India's de facto annexation of the Muslim-majority state," Qureshi wrote in the opinion piece. "India is ethno-nationalist saber-rattling in a region with major US interests and international stability at stake," the minister warned, possibly alluding to the precarious security situation in Afghanistan. Qureshi further said that the draconian measures of the Indian government in occupied Kashmir were moving the security situation in the region towards the unthinkable.Shah Mahmood Qureshi wrote that the unilateral move of India on August 5 abrogated the special autonomous status granted to Jammu and Kashmir within its constitution. "What has followed has reminded the world of the extremism and xenophobia that still plagues it and has forced everyone to call the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party-led Indian government out on its actions."Qureshi added that the people of Kashmir had been under total lockdown and had continued to see shortages of food and medicine, while thousands had been detained through mass arrests."Using the familiar tactics of night raids, alleged torture, a media blackout and the suppression of protests, the Indian government has been trying desperately to conceal occupied Kashmir situation," he said.FM Qureshi demanded the international community expose the reality that the BJP government was enacting through a nefarious political agenda being pursued in India. "In its plans to allow Indians to buy land in Kashmir, India's government is putting Kashmir's Muslim majority at risk-a policy that could change Kashmir's identity," Qureshi warned. In Pakistan's opinion, he added, this violated the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibited a country from transporting its own people into occupied territory. The foreign minister further maintained that as the country that had always committed itself to speaking up for the people of Kashmir, Pakistan could not be silent on the unfolding catastrophe in Kashmir."We must not be naïve about what is happening in Kashmir, and India must be stopped before this goes any further," Qureshi wrote in his opinion piece.

Trump in the best position to play role in Kashmir: PM Imran

The world needed to understand the gravity of the human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir and pressure India to lift the military curfew in the valley, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said in an interview with American network CNN.PM Imran talked at length about the issues discussed in his address to the United Nations earlier on Friday.Highlighting the situation of occupied Kashmir, the premier said that the enormity of the situation could be gauged from the presence of nine hundred thousand Indian troops in the occupied territory. Ruling out a meeting with his Indian counterpart Prime Minister Narendra Modi, PM Imran noted that besieging Kashmiris for over fifty days was a testament to the hateful mindset of the Indian leader. PM Imran added that Modi represented the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), that was established in 1925 after being inspired by Hitler and Nazism. “RSS believes in ethnic cleansing of Muslims in India. This ideology of racial superiority is also responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, who was considered soft on Muslims” PM Imran said, referencing the slain Indian independence leader. Responding to a question about the role US could play to ease tensions in South Asia, PM Imran said that President Donald Trump headed the most powerful country in the world, and was in the best position to do something about the issue of Kashmir. “Modi does not want international mediation as he knows the moment this issue becomes internationalized, the world will understand that Kashmiris are fighting for the right to self-determination and are subject to the worst human rights abuses by Indian forces,” he maintained. The prime minister urged the international community to move on this issue as it was a flashpoint between two nuclear-armed countries. “If it was something localized, the world would not have been pushed about it,” he stressed. In response to a question regarding Iran-US tensions, PM Imran said Pakistan does not want conflict near its borders. Conflict in the Persian Gulf could lead to an increase in global oil prices and a host of other issues, he noted.“To be fair with President Trump, all his instincts are against war. I also spoke to President Rouhani of Iran and let's see where the situation leads,” he shared.

PM Imran asked everyone at UNGA to Google something. What was it?

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan arrives to address the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York City, US, September 27, 2019. Drew Angerer/Getty Images/AFPPakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan warned the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday of India's plans of carrying out a "bloodbath" in occupied Kashmir."There are 900,000 troops there, they haven't come to, as Narendra Modi says — for the prosperity of Kashmir … These 900,000 troops, what are they going to do? When they come out? There will be a bloodbath," he said. Before he cautioned world leaders at the forum of Indian PM Narendra Modi's designs, however, he explained to them the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing racist organisation inspired by Nazi Germany's Adolf Hitler and Italy's former fascist leader Benito Mussolini.Emphasising Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir and the ongoing curfew by the occupation forces, PM Imran explained the background of the RSS "how can anyone do something like this"."Mr Narendra Modi is a life member of RSS. RSS was an organisation inspired by Adolf Hitler and Mussolini came about in 1925. They believed in racial purity, racial superiority. They also believed they were an Aryan race like the Nazi believed they were an Aryan race."All that I am saying can be verified. This is the time of information revolution. You can Google what I am saying," he told the United Nations General Assembly. What is RSS?"It is very important for me to explain this to you so you know what is happening in India. This RSS believed in the ethnic cleansing of Muslims from India."The Pakistani prime minister informed the forum about the background of Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar — or MS Golwalkar — and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, the founding fathers of the Hindu-nationalist RSS, which believed in the "racial superiority of the Hindu race" over Muslims in Christians in India.Golwalkar, the RSS's second Sarsanghchalak, wrote Bunch of Thought, which focused on nationalism and the idea of a nation. He once said: "Germany has also shown how well nigh impossible it is for Races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for use in Hindusthan to learn and profit by."Savarkar, an Indian independence activist who started activism in college, formed the Hindutva philosophy and later became a known figure of the Hindu Mahasabha — or the Great Society of Hindus. He tried to get Hindi made the national language and forced people who had converted to other faith to reconvert to Hinduism but died because he refused to use medicines."It was hatred for the Muslims and for the Christians because they believed that this golden age of Hindu civilisation was stopped because of Muslim rule centuries back and then the British rule of India."So, it was racial superiority, and hatred for Muslims and Christians," he said.'Hitler brown shirts'PM Imran explained to the audience how the racist ideology of RSS founders Savarkar and Golwalkar led to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi shortly after the Partition of the sub-continent, and, later, inspired Modi and his RSS-backers to carry out the anti-Muslim Gujarat riots of 2002 when he was chief minister of the Indian state."You look at the founding fathers of RSS Golwalkar and Savarkar. Just Google them and you will find out. And this ideology of hate is what murdered the great Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. It was this ideology of hate that made Narendra Modi in 2002 do a pogrom against Muslims in Gujarat when he was a chief minister."He allowed three days for these RSS goons who were inspired by the Hitler brown shirts — they actually wear brown shirts. This RSS, the previous Congress home minister gave a statement that in RSS camps terrorists are being trained. And these terrorists butchered 2,000 Muslims … 150,000 Muslims were made homeless."Narendra Modi could not travel to the US because of that."I need to make you understand this background before I explain to you that what sort of a mindset would lay siege to eight million people with 900,000 troops. Women, children, sick people...locked in as animals. In fact, of what I know of England, if 8 million animals were locked in, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) would have made a lot of noise about it. These are human beings!" he said.Read more:

PM Imran highlights Kashmir, Islamophobia at UNGA

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday commenced his address to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) speaking about the climate emergency the world faces at present and urging the United Nations "to take leadership for this".Terming it an "urgent problem that the world must address", PM Imran said: "I feel there’s a lack of seriousness, perhaps some of the leaders who can do a lot, do not realise the urgency of the situation."Billions of dollars siphoned off by ruling elite The second issue, which the Pakistani premier termed as "even more critical", was how "every year, billions of dollars leave the poor countries and go towards rich countries".PM Imran said: "Billions of dollars [are] siphoned off by the ruling elite to Western countries."Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan arrives to address the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York City, US, September 27, 2019. Drew Angerer/Getty Images/AFPHe told the world leaders that money-laundering, "which happens because money leaves poor countries and goes to rich countries," was devastating the developing world, causing more poverty and deaths, and impoverishing those countries. Also read: Kashmir part and parcel of our soulThe PM called for the rich countries of the world to "show political will" and asked how were the poor countries expected to spend money on human development in accordance with what the UN asks when money left the developing countries.IslamophobiaNoting that there were 1.3 billion Muslims in the world, PM Imran explained that Islamophobia, "since 9/11, has grown at a pace which is alarming".This menace, he said, was creating a division. The premier, highlighting hypocrisy around the world, said: “A women can take off her clothes but cannot put on more clothes?“Hijab has become an issue in some countries … it is seen as a weapon,” he said.PM Imran said there were terms like radical Islam and Islamic terrorism and that was what was contributing to the spread of Islamophobia.Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan addresses the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York City, US, September 27, 2019. Drew Angerer/Getty Images/AFP"How is a person in New York, in Midwest in the US, or in Europe, how is he going to distinguish" between the two versions of Islam considering the rise of Islamophobia, PM Imran asked."Terrorism has nothing to do with any religion," he emphasised. The term, he noted, was "used by some leaders [and] it has caused pain among the Muslims."Muslim countries watch Islamophobia travelling [and spreading and] it is getting worse," he said. "In the European countries, it is marginalising the communities and marginalisation leads to radicalisation."After 9/11, it came as war against radical Islam [but] in all communities, there are radicals," the PM said, adding that Islamophobia had bumped the hatred against the Muslim community and that it was almost like physical pain.'Most critical' Kashmir issueHis fourth — and the "most critical" of issues during the UNGA speech — was to draw the world's attention to the emerging humanitarian crisis in Indian occupied Kashmir.PM Imran said: "This is the reason why I especially came here; it is about what is happening in Kashmir."I want to make one thing clear that when we came to power, my first priority was that Pakistan would be a country that will try its best to bring peace. We had been through this war on terror," he added."We went though a nightmare. 70,000 people were killed. No Pakistani was involved in 9/11. The Taliban were in Afghanistan, Al-Qaeda was in Afghanistan."When we came to power, we decided that we would dismantle what was left of these groups," he added.Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan addresses the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York City, US, September 27, 2019. Drew Angerer/Getty Images/AFPThe premier then went on to talk about how India, under the guise of "Islamic terrorism", was inflicting more cruelty on the Kashmiri people. "There is no other narrative left for India,” he stressed, adding that there was probability of another Pulwama-like incident from New Delhi to blame and "bomb" Islamabad.Due to these issues, the eight million people under a curfew, as well as the communication  and media  blackout, in the valley were likely to get radicalised, he warned.PM Imran is in New York as part of his week-long visit to the US, where he has held meetings with US President Donald Trump, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohammad, pressing them to raise the issue of Kashmir at the UN.During his discussions with the global leaders, media interaction, and speeches, he also spoke of climate change, solving the Afghan imbroglio, and the crisis in the Gulf region. It is noteworthy that PM Imran's Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, addressed the UNGA session ahead of him.Read more:

Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday! Hope you’re having a lovely morning. It feels like fall here in Tucson and I am here.for.it. The mornings have a hint of coolness to them and it’s perfect weather for hiking and playing outside. I’m looking forward to a walk with P and the puppers this morning. This weekend is the Greek festival in Tucson (OPA!) and we’re heading to Phoenix to check out the new Great Wolf Lodge. I think the girls are going to love it! I’d love to hear what you have going on.

Here are some faves from the week and around the web. I always love hearing about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re lovin’ in the comments.

Adventures from lately:

The Pilot and I attended Roundup for a Cure last weekend, which is a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We went with a large group of friends and also had the opportunity to connect with some inspiring CF families. It was really incredible to learn about the new treatments that are being offered and I keep praying that these incredible doctors and researchers are able to develop a cure.

Roundup for a cure

The theme was Greatest Showman -esque (like turn-of-the-century carnival) with acrobats, aerial silks, carnival games, people walking around on stilts, and a Tarot card reader. They also had a silent auction and the Pilot and I are notorious for having a couple glasses of wine and going bid crazy. We walked away with 6 prizes lol. It was a great date night, especially since the Pilot was only in town for a couple of days.

Roundup

A voice lesson! You guys. I was blown away by all of your kind, supportive, and inspiring comments about my choir roadkill post. It was so awesome to read your thoughts and similar experiences. I always feel a bit nervous when I put myself *out there* here on the blog, but you always make me feel thankful I did it. Since I’m trying out for the choir again in a few months, I booked a voice lesson with a local coach. We did tons of warm-ups and scale work, then I got to sing some fun songs, which was a nice break after drilling my Italian aria back into my head along with the classical excepts. I sang Shallow, On My Own (cliché but I’ll always love it) and some old showtunes. It was an hour out of my day that I didn’t need to spend since I had two deadlines due the following day, but it was SO worth it.

Read, watch, listen:

This Is Us. I’ve been impatiently waiting for This Is Us to return all summer. The first episode back didn’t disappoint. No spoilers or anything, but it reminded me of the pilot episode. I was sobbing with chills all over my body, so amazed by how it all came together. It was so good I might have to rewatch it this weekend.

Definitely check out this week’s podcast episode about plastic surgery! This was one of my highest-downloaded episodes yet, and it’s a fun one.

12 book suggestions.

What we can do about climate change.

Easy ways to calm pre-race nerves

What to eat before and after a long run.

Good eats:

The fam came over for dinner on Wednesday night and we basically had a mini Thanksgiving. Madre brought turkey, ham with pineapple, mashed potatoes, gravy, and bread. I made an enormous cheese board (as usual),

Giant cheese board

Skinnytaste turkey pumpkin chili (one of my fave fall recipes!),

and Kyle brought over the best green goddess salad from August Rhodes. Nani brought pumpkin pie.

Feast

It was an epic feast and the kiddos all ran around playing while the adults drank wine and chatted. The only thing missing was the Pilot, but it was a pretty great night.

You need these brownies in your life

Easy pumpkin spice granola.

Still loving this chickpea scramble.

Just for kicks:

The Pilot sent this to me and I cried a little laughing.
