Why Bone Broth is the Secret to Getting Healthy with Dr. Kellyann Petrucci

For women 40 and over, FIBER IS MAGIC. I repeat, fiber is magic! And many people are missing the mark here. First, fiber is great for slowing down the rate at which insulin attacks things in your body — with fiber, it’s a slow release, not a hard and heavy insulin hit. Second, is that when we eat fiber, we release hormones very differently. When we age, it’s known that we can have “estrogen dominance” that naturally occurs as progesterone starts to dip. One of the natural ways you can STABILIZE your hormones during this time is to eat fiber. The fiber works with your microbiome to release the estrogen! This is one reason it’s so important to not leave these out of your diet

Diets should do just three things:

  1. Get the inflammation down in your body
  2. Regulate your blood sugar
  3. Heal the gut

With that trifecta, you will have freedom and transform — and spoiler alert, bone broth is the superstar when it comes to this. Your gut wall and intestines have a VERY thin layer of protection, and it’s very very easy to puncture. This is why it’s important to have something to HEAL it (or as Dr. Kellyann says “spackle” it!) Bone broth does this thanks to both Glycine and gelatin! Glycine (an amino acid), which is found in bone broth, has actually been found in studies to heal and seal the gut wall. So bone broth is your one, two, punch to healing your gut and increasing your anti-aging effects.

Are you a vegetarian? You can look up “potassium broth”. It’s not quite as great as bone broth, but it definitely checks off some of the boxes.

Benefits of Bone Broth:

  • Great form of protein per serving
  • Minerals
  • Amino acids
  • Healing and sealing of your gut
  • Strengthens bones, muscles, tendons
  • Boosts immunity
  • Fortifies hair & nails
  • Improves elasticity in skin and can result in reduced appearance of wrinkles
  • Reduces internal inflammation which can be the catalyst for many diseases, ailments, and common health problems
  • Improves joint function and reduces joint pain
  • Releases toxins
  • Curbs appetite

You can see more on bone broth (and find a recipe) in this previous Benefits of Bone Broth blog.

October 2022 Book Recap

Sharing the books I read in October and if I’d recommend adding these to your list!

Hi friends! How are you? I hope you had a wonderful weekend! The Pilot had a promotion at work – I’ll share some pics in Friday Faves – and we had a blast celebrating with friends and family. This morning, I have a ton of work stuff to do because I’m headed out of town this week for a business mastermind. I’m looking forward to a walk with Maisey to break up the day and a couple of 1:1 coaching calls.

For today’s post, I’m sharing the books I read last month! It was a hit and miss month, and I have high hopes for a couple of new books on the ol’ nightstand. Here’s the recap of October’s books.

October 2022 Book Recap

The Cancer Revolution

I picked up a copy of The Cancer Revolution because I follow Dr. Connealy on Instagram and LOVE her account. She shares so much valuable info, and I think it’s fascinating to be able to follow someone who treats cancer frequently, and successfully. She uses a blend of alternative and traditional therapies, including IV vitamin infusions, oxygen therapy, red light, detox strategies, and sauna, in addition to low-dose chemotherapy. I wanted to read this book because I’m all about empowering myself with extra tools and information, and found so many valuable resources in this book for preventing cancer, treating cancer, potentially helpful supplements and more. 10/10 recommend.

From Amazon:

When it comes to cancer, conventional doctors are trained to treat their patients exclusively with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. These methods are grueling on the whole body – and they don’t treat beyond the tumor or the cancer itself. The focus is on the disease, not the whole person – and because of this, the outcomes in conventional medicine can be bleak.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy has developed a whole-person approach to treating cancer – and these treatments have helped thousands of patients through her Cancer Center for Healing. In The Cancer Revolution, Dr. Connealy shows you how to get to the root causes of cancer and the practical steps you can take to get back on the path to healing — from balancing your body’s chemistry with nutritional supplements, following a healthy food plan, detoxifying your body and home, exercising regularly, getting deep restful sleep every night, practicing stress reduction techniques, and putting together a supportive healing team.

Chemotherapy and radiation have their place in treatment, but in many cases, they are simply not enough, because cancer isn’t caused by one thing, but by many different factors. All of these causes must be addressed, not just the tumor. The Cancer Revolution will equip you to make impactful, achievable lifestyle choices that fight the root of the disease, and that offer hope for recovery and a cancer-free life.

11/22/63

You guys. This book was WILD. I listened to the audio version and the narrator was fantastic. I loved the different voices for characters and truly brought life to this Butterfly Effect-ish story. The premise of the book is that a man named Jake Epping is tasked with using a portal to go back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. In the process, he also wants to save and change the life of someone he knows. Jake learns the ramifications of altering the past, in addition to trying to decide if he wants to return to the present day at all.

I’ve never read anything by Stephen King before, since I typically stay away from *scary* or gruesome books. This book was intense, and some parts were hard for me to listen to, but I can see why Stephen King is so popular lol. My only problem with this one is that is it LONG. The guy is wordy. He probably could have ditched about 200 pages in the middle. At the same time, the character development is so deep, and I still find myself thinking about it (especially the ending!). I’d give it a 9/10. I want to watch the series on Hulu now, too!

From Amazon:

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King – who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer – takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life – like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 – turning on a dime.

Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession – to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world – of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful – and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Hester– DNF

I had high hopes for this Book of the Month pic, and thought it would be a fun choice for fall/Halloween. Just under halfway through, I’m calling it quits. I’m so bored and there are too many books to be read. If you want my copy, I’m happy to pass it along!

From Amazon:

A vivid reimagining of the woman who inspired Hester Prynne, the tragic heroine of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, and a journey into the enduring legacy of New England’s witchcraft trials.

Who is the real Hester Prynne?

Isobel Gamble is a young seamstress carrying generations of secrets when she sets sail from Scotland in the early 1800s with her husband, Edward. An apothecary who has fallen under the spell of opium, his pile of debts have forced them to flee Edinburgh for a fresh start in the New World. But only days after they’ve arrived in Salem, Edward abruptly joins a departing ship as a medic––leaving Isobel penniless and alone in a strange country, forced to make her way by any means possible.

When she meets a young Nathaniel Hawthorne, the two are instantly drawn to each other: he is a man haunted by his ancestors, who sent innocent women to the gallows––while she is an unusually gifted needleworker, troubled by her own strange talents. As the weeks pass and Edward’s safe return grows increasingly unlikely, Nathaniel and Isobel grow closer and closer. Together, they are a muse and a dark storyteller; the enchanter and the enchanted. But which is which?

In this sensuous and hypnotizing tale, a young immigrant woman grapples with our country’s complicated past, and learns that America’s ideas of freedom and liberty often fall short of their promise. Interwoven with Isobel and Nathaniel’s story is a vivid interrogation of who gets to be a “real” American in the first half of the 19th century, a depiction of the early days of the Underground Railroad in New England, and atmospheric interstitials that capture the long history of “unusual” women being accused of witchcraft. Meticulously researched yet evocatively imagined, Laurie Lico Albanese’s Hester is a timeless tale of art, ambition, and desire that examines the roots of female creative power and the men who try to shut it down.

Go-To Dinners

I was so thrilled when my very favorite released a new cookbook. You can always depend on Ina for recipes that are tested meticulously and taste amazing. I have around a 99% success rate with Ina recipes, and she’s my go-to when I’m looking for a dinner party recipe or crowdpleaser. This cookbook is focused on go-to dinners that can be made fairly quickly, along with sides and desserts. The desserts selection is worth it alone (a glorious chocolate tart and cupcakes), and I can’t wait to add some of these new meals to the rotation.

From Amazon:

Even Ina Garten, America’s most-trusted and beloved home cook, sometimes finds cooking stressful. To make life easy she relies on a repertoire of recipes that she knows will turn out perfectly every time. Cooking night after night during the pandemic inspired her to re-think the way she approached dinner, and the result is this collection of comforting and delicious recipes that you’ll love preparing and serving. You’ll find lots of freeze-ahead, make-ahead, prep-ahead, and simply assembled recipes so you, too, can make dinner a breeze.

In Go-To Dinners, Ina shares her strategies for making her most satisfying and uncomplicated dinners. Many, like Overnight Mac & Cheese, you can make ahead and throw in the oven right before dinner. Light dinners like Tuscan White Bean Soup can be prepped ahead and assembled at the last minute. Go-to family meals like Chicken in a Pot with Orzo and Hasselback Kielbasa will feed a crowd with very little effort. And who doesn’t want to eat Breakfast For Dinner? You’ll find recipes for Scrambled Eggs Cacio e Pepe and Roasted Vegetables with Jammy Eggs that are a snap to make and so satisfying. Ina’s “Two-Fers” guide you on how to turn leftovers from one dinner into something different and delicious the second night.

And sometimes the best dinner is one you don’t even have to cook! You’ll find Ina’s favorite boards to serve with store-bought ingredients, like an Antipasto Board and Breakfast-for-Dinner Board that are fun to assemble and so impressive to serve. Finally, because no meal can be considered dinner without dessert, there are plenty of prep-ahead and easy sweets like a Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie and Beatty’s Chocolate Cupcakes that everyone will rave about.

For Ina, “I love you, come for dinner” is more than just an invitation to share a meal, it’s a way to create a community of friends and family who love and take care of each other, and we all need that now more than ever. These go-to recipes will give you the confidence to create dinners that will bring everyone to your table.

What are you reading right now? I’m looking for a pageturner after the Hester letdown.

Also, I’d love to hear your favorite cookbook author!

Have a wonderful morning and thank you so much for stopping by the blog today!

xoxo

Gina

Friday Faves + giveaway time

Hi hi! Happy Friday! What’s going on this weekend? I hope you have a fun and relaxing one ahead! I’m catching up on some work stuff this morning, studying for IHP, and fighting the temptation to decorate for Christmas. Usually we’re a strong “honor the bird” family and wait until after Thanksgiving, but this year I have zero chill. Give me wreaths, Christmas trees, sparkly holiday baubles, and all the holly jolly. I’m 100% in the Christmas spirit and want to live.it.up.

This weekend, Pilot is getting promoted to another leadership position, so we have a ceremony tomorrow. Also, our Kleiger fam is here to celebrate!! We had an amazing dinner at Culinary Dropout with them last night.

I’m so happy to spend some time with them and enjoy adventures today with Betsy while the kiddos are at school. The Pilot’s mom gets in today, too, so it should be a great weekend with lots of family/friend time.

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love heading about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Read, watch, listen:

Listen to this week’s podcast episode here with a simple nutrition hack.

An important podcast episode from the Model Health Show.

Reader comments on parenting teens.

The David Foster documentary on Netflix. Betsy told me I needed to watch it (“your boyfriend is in it”) and it blew me away. I was familiar with his background, but had no idea how many enormous hits he’s written and/or produced over the years, along with the talents he’s discovered.

I can’t wait to watch this.

Fashion + beauty:

Got this cute blazer for a steal and the quality is gorgeous. I love the way blazers look with jeans and a tank, or with a dress and Chelsea boots. I figured I’ll wear this one a lot this fall!

I’ve had these Madewell jeans in my cart for about 2 weeks and think I’m going to go for it. This is my truce attempt between skinny jeans and the ridiculously unflattering wide leg situations. Does anyone have these? Should I go for it?

Now is the chance to get new makeup brushes if you’ve been needing them.

Fitness + good eats:

In case you’re already looking for a turkey recipe, I’ve gotchu.

Feeling in the mood for green bean casserole already.

Slow cooker pumpkin soup.

Time for a little giveaway! My friends at EquiLife have kindly donated 5 tubs of their Daily Nutritional Support powder for 5 lucky reader friends. This is one of the 4 or so protein powders that I’ll drink, and I love that it’s packed with extra vitamins and minerals. It’s also the foundation of the 7-day detox that so many of us recently did as a community. (You can still use FITNESSISTA20 for a 20% discount on the detox!)

If you’d like to try out the DNS powder, simply leave a comment below with something you’re looking forward to this weekend. I’ll pick the lucky winners on Monday at midnight PST and announce here on Tuesday morning. Ready, set, go!

xoxo

10 tips for exercising in cold weather

Sharing tips for exercising in cold weather, benefits, and sample cold weather workouts.

Hi friends! How’s the morning going so far? I hope you’re having a great day. I’m getting in a quick Fit Team workout and getting ready for some out-of-town company; I can’t wait! I’m also going to take Maisey on a long walk because the weather has been dreeeeamy.

Even though the weather is starting to cool down, I’ve been thinking abut how important to keep up with a consistent routine, no matter the season. Cold weather can discourage us from working out, especially because it’s dark and can be verryyyy tempting to stay snuggled under the blankets. It can absolutely be a challenge to get up and head outside to work out, or to the gym, and finding the right motivation and routine can help you stay focused on your goals. Today, I’m sharing some practical tips on how to stay warm and injury-free while working out in the cold weather!

10 Tips for exercising in cold weather

Can you work out in cold weather?

You absolutely can, but it depends on your fitness level and if you’re used to the current climate. If you’re in Arizona like me and travel to Alaska in the freezing snow, it might be a little trickier to keep up with your outdoor workout routine. Of course, check with your doctor before making any fitness changes, and talk to your health provider if you have certain conditions that may prevent you from working out outdoors.

Some tips that may help:

Dress in layers

I like to layer my clothes, especially since the temperature fluctuates so much. You may start off with a jacket, long-sleeved tee, and tank, and end up just in your tank top by the time the workout is over. You can also wear high socks if you don’t want to start off with pants. I feel like layers is something you learn over time, especially what types of fabrics and coverage you prefer, and also how the weather behaves where you’re located. In Tucson, it’s winter at 5am, spring at 10am, summer at 2pm, back to spring at 5pm, and winter again by 8pm.

Wear sunscreen

Even if you’re cold, you may forget that being outdoors is still exposing you to the sun’s rays. Wear sunscreen on any areas that are likely to burn, especially if you’ll be out for a while. I wear this SPF on my face every single day.

Stay hydrated

The same thing goes with water! In the winter, it’s more easy to become dehydrated, because our sweat and the heat isn’t reminding us to drink water. Be sure to carry some type of water with you, and if you’re going to be doing a challenging or longer workout (greater than 1 hour), I recommend adding some electrolytes.

Wear the right gear

Extra goods, like an ear warmer, thermal leggings, and gloves can make a huge difference. You may also have to add an extra moisture barrier to your face (like a facial moisturizer), and lip balm if the air is dry and frigid.

Warm up and cool down

Warming up before your workout can help to increase tissue temperature, prepare the body for movement, and get your mindset in the game. Take the time to cool down after your workout, allowing the body temperature and heart rate to decrease.

Wear good shoes

*Good* doesn’t mean expensive. Make sure your shoes fit well and are suited to the type of activity you’re about to do. I highly recommend visiting a running store to get your gait checked by a professional. They can recommend shoes based on your particular workouts and whether you have pronation or supination.

Learn the signs of hypothermia and frostbite

Watch out for any signs from your body that it’s too dang cold, or you’re not dressed adequately for the weather. Shivering, slurred speech, exhaustion, confusion, and memory loss are huge red flags. Also watch out for numbness in your extremities and a body temperature below 95 degrees. Hypothermia is a medical emergency. Call 911 and get help immediately.

Stay within your levels

Don’t push yourself in new weather or new terrain, or think that you can maintain your full workout without easing into it. For example, if you typically go for an hour run when it’s sunny, try a 20 minute run in the cold and see how you feel. Increase the duration over time. Don’t be afraid to take your workout inside!

Have ID and a method to contact someone

When you’re doing any type of outdoor workout, be sure to take an ID with you and a method to contact someone, like a satellite watch or cell phone.

Even better: work out with a buddy

I definitely prefer outdoor workouts with friends. This way, you can make sure everyone stays safe, too. <3

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take your workout inside if the weather is too extreme or outside your comfort level!

Benefits of working out in cold weather

Cold weather can help boost your immune system

When your body adapts to colder temperatures, it can make your immune system stronger.

It can potentially increase calorie burn

According to this study, exercising in the cold can burn more calories than exercising in warmer temperatures.

It can be a mood booster!

Moving our body in any capacity can release endorphins, which give us those feel-good warm fuzzies, which are extra appreciated during the darker months, when we may be more susceptible to seasonal affective disorder.

You can train your body in a different way

When the weather changes, it opens up new opportunities to work out in a different capacity. You may find that you enjoy certain activities more when the weather cools down! For example, I LOVE hiking, but I l love it much more when it isn’t 100 degrees.

Cold Weather Workouts

Here are some bodyweight workouts you can do outdoors (or indoors!) this winter!

Run/strength workout

Strength and power total body workout

How to train for a half marathon while strength training

So, tell me friends: do you workout outdoors when it’s chilly?

What’s a fitness struggle you experience over the winter months?

xoxo

These gripper slippers! I have a pair from years ago and wear them constantly during the chilly months.

For the new mama:

A Sakara delivery! These meals are so fresh and beautiful, and will feel like such a wonderful gift for a sleep-deprived mama. She’ll be able to enjoy nourishing and beautiful meals she didn’t have to cook herself. Click here and use XOGINAH for 20% off meal delivery and clean boutique items.

Joggers or cute pajamas

A hooded robe or wrap cardigan

Personalized name necklace.

– An offer to come over and help her out with anything she might need (playing with older kids, holding the baby while she takes a shower or stares at the wall, help with errands or grocery pickup)… and actually do it 🙂

Stocking stuffers and under $40 finds:

Organifi Gold. Stack my code FITNESSISTA with current promos for an extra 20% off! I also use the green and red juice and the Harmony on a regular basis.

Beauty drops (XOGINAH for 20% off). I love these mineral drops in my water. They’re completely tasteless and are a great way to boost back minerals in water that may have been depleted.

– Makeup eraser. These things are a GAMECHANGER and really do remove makeup extremely well, even heavy eye makeup. I have some mini ones that I stash in my bag when I travel, too.

– Make a grazing box and drop it off on her doorstep with a bottle of wine!

PF soy candles

A luxurious and calming pillow mist; I use this every night before bed

A beautiful and delicate trinket dish

Color and care lip balm set

Frozen wine slushie mix

Takes morning coffee to the next level

Midnight minis; break these up for multiple stocking stuffers. I also like doing this with these lipglosses.

Barefoot dreams socks

Topical magnesium spray. I’ve been obsessed with this for maybe 2 years now! I spray it on the kids’ feet, too.

Set of claw clips

A mini waffle maker

This hand salve for super dry hands

Small candles from a beloved local company (get Mt. Lemmon or Sedona!)

An amethyst face roller

My #1 hair care must-have

So tell me friends: what are you gifting for the ladies in your family and your BFFs? What’s on your personal wish list this year?

These are all items I curated myself and genuinely think they’d make awesome gifts for someone you love. Affiliate links are included, which don’t affect purchase price but enable me to earn a small kickback. I know a lot of creators share gift guides this time of year, so I’m sending a heartfelt thank you to those who shop my links and help me to support our family. <3
